Self-publishing niche in children's books

On Nantucket, business journalist Peter Barnes overheard a tourist asking a bookstore owner for a children's book about the island, reports the Washington Post's Elizabeth Chang in Making It: Children's Books by Peter Barnes. The bookstore owner said they didn't have one, but could sell a million of them if they did. Peter wrote Nat, Nat, the Nantucket Cat, he and his wife hired an artist, set up a publishing company, had the book printed, and with start-up costs of $10,000 to $15,000 were on their way to a flourishing side business--as Peter continued doing business journalism.

An encouraging story at a time of "Woe is me." Think niche publishing! Find a niche where people still buy books!
